Beijú is a very popular bread alternative in Brazil, especially for breakfasts and quick meals. Fun and easy to prepare, it is a perfect substitute for wheat flour bread since it is gluten-free and has no sodium, sugar, dairy, yeast or eggs, it is also fat-free. Beijú is a truly minimalist product based on an ancient Amazonian recipe that basically uses cassava.

 

Beijú is a delicious choice for celiac, allergic or simply healthy people who want to better control their diet. Being a pure source of carbohydrates without any unwanted nutrients, such as fat or sodium, Beijú is a frequent choice for athletes before and after workouts, and for those seeking weight control.

 

Originally an indigenous dish, Beijú was first discovered by colonizers in the state of Pernambuco. Delicious and versatile, it soon became an alternative to wheat bread. Beijú first went mainstream in the northeast of Brazil, which is why even Brazilians think it is a dish from that region, when it is actually an indigenous dish that can be found all over the country, in particular in the vast Amazon forest.

HOW TO PREPARE

In a hot frying pan spread a layer of Beijú to evenly cover the bottom of the pan; wait few minutes, it will stick together becoming a single flatbread.

 

When the edges start to lift, it’s time to flip it. Lower the heat and add your favourite fillings or toppings.

You can fold like a taco, or eat it like a pizza or pancake. Beijús are delicious with both savory and sweet recipes. Use your creativity!
